After cancellation this week because of bad weather, High Peaks Trail Association will lead a hike Dec. 21 from Buck Creek Gap to Neal’s Creek.

Stroll Through History with High Peaks Sunday, Dec. 29

The High Peaks Trail Association will lead walkers on a stroll around downtown Burnsville on Sunday, Dec. 29, with a focus on local history. Hike leader and amateur historian Jake Blood will point out local landmarks of historical significance, while providing fascinating anecdotes and details from our community’s colorful past.

The 1.5-mile stroll will be at a leisurely pace, but walkers should dress appropriately for our winter weather. The group will gather on the Burnsville Town Square at 1 p.m., returning there after the 2-hour stroll.

If you want to get in shape before the upcoming holiday season of over-indulgence, join the High Peaks Trail Association for a jaunt from Buck Creek Gap to Neal's Creek.
This 6-mile hike is rated moderate. We will follow the Mountains-to-Sea trail from where it crosses South Highway 80, paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway before descending to Neal's Creek near the Black Mountain Campground.

Our Third Annual Meeting of the ncHPta membership will be Saturday, December 7 at 10 AM in the Community Room on the second floor of the NEW Yancey County Library (321 School Circle, across from the Parkway Playhouse) in Burnsville, NC.  We have moved the meeting to the morning so as not to conflict with the Burnsville Town Holiday Parade scheduled fo 3 PM.  Come join us for the meeting and then have plenty of time for lunch in town and to see the parade!

Sunday Stroll to Roaring Fork Falls

Sunday, Nov. 24, the club will lead a stroll to Roaring Fork Falls, one of the county’s most dramatic waterfalls. This easy hike of about 1 mile has little elevation change.

Beauty Spot Hike Set for Saturday, Nov. 2

Spectacular views will be the reward for hikers joining High Peaks Trail Association for a Nov. 2 outing to Beauty Spot and Unaka Mountain. The strenuous hike of about 6 miles will include a climb and descent of roughly 1,000 feet.

The hike will traverse a series of balds beginning at Beauty Spot, then proceed steeply up Unaka Mountain before branching off on Red Fork Road to take in the superb views from the Unaka Mountain Overlook. We will then backtrack our path, returning to Beauty Spot.

High Peaks Seeks Spectacular Views in Sat, Oct. 12 Hike

Join High Peaks for a high altitude hike in Madison County Oct. 12 when the club tackles a section of the Appalachian Trail that crosses a spectacular high ridge known as Firescald. Good leaf color and stunning long-range views in all directions should greet hikers; legend has it that in clear weather one can see the Rocky Mountains from this vantage point. Come see for yourself! We guarantee there will be rocks and mountains.
