ncHighPeaks is a member of the Southeast Foot Trails Coalition, a consortium of over 40 hiking and trail maintenance groups, which is holding its 7th Biennial Conference September 20-23 at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee, about 70 miles north of Chattanooga.  Please see the attached information sheet or visit thier website ( www.southeastfoottrails.org ) to get more information on the hikes, workshops and other related activities and to register (registration costs increase Aug 1).  Hope to see you there!!

Stroll the Old Mt. Mitchell Trail

Sunday Stroll Set for July 29 North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will hold its monthly “Sunday Stroll” on July 29th at Mt. Mitchell. This is a family friendly, relaxed hike following the Old Mt. Mitchell Trail from the summit to the restaurant. The group will visit an education center along the way, enjoy a panoramic view from the observation platform, and hike through one of the most unique ecosystems in the eastern United States. The trail is about one mile long with a descent of 450 feet.
 

Friends of Mt. Mitchell State Park Hike

NC High Peaks Trail Association in our role as the Friends of Mt. Mitchell State Park will be leading hikes at the Park in conjunction with the Park Staff.  These hikes are primarily designed for day visitors to the Park but High Peaks members and friends are always welcome.  The next hike will be Sunday July 15 and then once or twice per month on weekends.  Watch the website for the schedule.  Two hikes will be led each day:

Historic Mt. Mitchell Hike

Set for Saturday July 14

North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association is sponsoring a historic Mt. Mitchell hike on Saturday, July 14. The hike begins at Steppes Gap by the Park Ranger office along the road to the summit and follows the old logging railroad grade established nearly a century ago for four miles to Ogle Gap and then down to the Cattail Creek Community.

High Peaks Trail Maintenance on the MST

High Peaks will be working our section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail on Friday, June 22.  Meet at the town square at 8:30 AM or at Buck Creek Gap parking area where NC Route 80 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway about 9 AM.

Sunday Stroll on the Lower River Loop at Black Mountain Campground

North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will hold its monthly “Sunday Stroll” on June 24th at the Black Mountain Campground. This is a family friendly, relaxed hike following the Lower River Loop trail which is about 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of just 100 feet. The stroll is lead by Jake and Cynthia Blood, who will talk about the flora and fauna and other natural sights along the way.

ncHighPeaks Celebrates National Trails Day June 2 With a Hike to 6,189’ Grassy Ridge on Appalachian Trail

Join the NC High Peaks Trails Association as we celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 2 with a hike to Grassy Ridge, the last 6,000-foot summit (6,189-feet) on the Appalachian Trail heading north before Mount Washington in New Hampshire.  The hike in is two-and-a-half miles from Carver’s Gap and traverses both Round and Jane Balds on the Appalachian Trail before taking a short side-trail to Grassy Ridge.  The views are 360-degrees of both North Carolina and Tennessee with our own Black Mountains and Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the East at 6,684-feet,
