Sunday Stroll on Loop Trail at The Orchard- Sept 30

 
The Orchard at Altapass will be the site of NC High Peaks Trail Association’s next Sunday stroll, Sept. 30, with a two mile meander through the apple orchards, ending with an opportunity to purchase ice cream, apple cider and snacks and listen to music and dance.
 
This is a child and dog friendly outing, but pets need to be on leashes. Clean-up bags will be provided.
 

High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day on Friday September 21

This Friday, September 21, we plan to continue working our section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.  

Mountain Heritage High School Nature Trail Workday Saturday (Sept 15)

Come join NC High Peaks for a TrailWorkday at Mountain Heritage High School this Saturday (Sep15) from 9am to noon.  Meet at the Orr Building justdown from the Football Parking lot and greenhouses. Breakfast will be provided by Toe River Valley Watch!! Dress is sturdy pants, close-toed shoes and bringgloves.  We will be laying down weed-barrier fabric andmulch on Phase One of the MHHS Nature Trail. Lost Cove Hike- Sunday, September 16

NC High Peaks and Carolina Mountain Club are staging a joint hike into Lost Cove on Sunday, Sept. 16. This is an eight mile round trip hike with a 1500 foot descent over a long series of switchbacks into the famous  pre-Civil War settlement that once thrived in isolation in the Nolichucky Gorge along the remote northern boundary of Yancey County.

High Peaks Trail Group Commemorates 100th Birthday of Pisgah National Forest

North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of National Forests in the Eastern United States with a hike along historic trails to Mackey Mountain on Saturday, Sept. 8. This is very pretty three and a half mile hike out, with good overviews of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are some steep sections, so good boots, hiking poles and even long pants are suggested. Bring plenty of water and lunch.

Slithery Friends Talk and Stroll At Carolina Hemlocks

North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will hold its quarterly information session with a guest lecture and habitat stroll at Carolina Hemlocks on Saturday, Sept. 1. Alex Edwards, a graduate student in Biology at WCU, will present a slide show about snakes, frogs, toads, lizards and salamanders found in this area and then will lead the group around the campground to find and identify examples.

NC High Peaks Trail Association Board Meeting

Please join us for the next NC High Peaks Trail Association Board Meeting which will take place at the Mountain Heritage Center across from the Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville.  Meeting will start at 1 PM.

Trail Maintenance on Friday August 17

We will be doing trail maintenance tomorrow on the upper portion of the Colbert Ridge Trail.  Meet at the parking lot across from the Weller's in Cattail Community at 8:30 AM.  There has been a slight change.  The overnight portion has been postponed.  We will just be working a regular trail day.  We will load up and drive as high up Winter Star Road as possible.  Dennis may have an ATV to take up equipment.  The rest of us will hike to Deep Gap and then to the top of the Colbert Ridge trail.  A couple folks will recon the Crest Trail beyond Winter Star.

Friends of Mt. Mitchell Hikes on Sunday August 12

NC High Peaks Trail Association in our role as the Friends of Mt. Mitchell State Park will be leading hikes at the Park in conjunction with the Park Staff.  These hikes are primarily designed for day visitors to the Park but High Peaks members and friends are always welcome.  The next hike will be Sunday August 12.  Two hikes will be led by Den Disney:
