Birding Field Trip to a Piedmont Prairie

06/19/2015 8:45 am

We will travel to the Piedmont Prairie at the McDowell Nature Center and Preserve in Mecklenburg County just south of Charlotte.

This will be a guided tour of the Piedmont Prairie with emphasis on birds and other fauna and flora.  Guides will include Adam DeWitte (Director of Education for the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association) who is a natural historian and has worked quite a bit at the prairie, and Matthew Harrell (Natural Resource Specialist at the McDowell Nature Center) who will explain how the prairie is managed and maintained.  This will be an all day trip: we will leave Burnsville by carpool or van (to be determined) by about 8:45 AM to meet Adam and Matthew at the Nature Center by 11:00.  Field time will be 2 ½ -3 ½ hours, and we should be back in Burnsville by 5:00 PM.

Cost and Numbers:

The cost is $40 per person.  All of these funds will go to support Cradle of Forestry Conservation Education Programs.  Please bring cash with you.  Russ Oates will collect the fee and pay Adam when we arrive at the Center.  The limit is 30 people.  If you want to go, e-mail Russ Oates at  (that’s lower case of RMOATES, NOT MOATES).  Russ will take reservations on a first come, first served basis and will notify everyone if they made the 30 or not.  Sign up deadline is June 12.
