Welcome in the New Year with NC High Peaks on Friday, January 1st! Our "First Day" hike will be to Mount Mitchell.
During 2016 North Carolina will be celebrating the centennial of our state park system. The first state park was Mount Mitchell and we will recognize this milestone with a series of hikes in the Black Mountains in 2016. Our First Day hike will be a challenging one. If the Park is open we plan to hike from the summit to Black Mountain Campground a distance of 5.5 miles with an elevation change of nearly 3400 feet. If the Park is closed we will hike in the other direction starting at Black Mountain Campground and hiking up the Mount Mitchell/MST trail as far as time allows then return by the same route.
In either case transportation will be provided from Burnsville by YCTA for a voluntary contribution of $5. No dogs are allowed on the van so you will need to make alternate arrangements if you plan to bring your pet. Contact hike leader John Whitehouse at 682-3217 or email@example.com to reserve a seat on the van.
We will meet on the Town Square in Burnsville at 8:30. Second meeting place will be Black Mountain Campground around 9:00 to 9:15. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks and layers of clothing including rain gear. Hiking poles are recommended. Watch our website and Facebook page for possible changes or cancellation due to bad weather. We should return to Burnsville before 5 pm.
For those wishing to enjoy a shorter hike the Park is planning a ¾ mile hike along the Nature Trail starting at the summit parking lot. This hike will be led by a ranger and will start at 1 pm. See the Park’s website for more details: http://www.ncparks.gov/mount-mitchell-state-park
