Celebrate National Trails Day with Mt. Mitchell Loop Hike June 4

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a celebration of National Trails Day by taking a loop hike around Mt. Mitchell on Saturday, June 4. This 6-mile jaunt is rated as moderate to difficult, but should offer tremendous views from the highest peak in the Eastern U.S.

Hikers will meet on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. Transportation to and from Mt. Mitchell will be provided in a Yancey County van for a $5 donation, reservations required. The hike will proceed along the Black Mountain Crest Trail to the Big Tom Connector Trail, then along the Buncombe Horse Trail and back up to the Mitchell summit on the Mt. Mitchell Trail.

Hikers should bring lunch, plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and probably a light jacket or rain gear depending on the forecast. Leashed pets are allowed on the hike but not on county vans, so if you bring your pet you’ll need to provide your own transportation.
National Trails Day is an annual celebration of the nation’s hiking trail system and outdoor activities sponsored by the American Hiking Society.
Contact hike leader Robert Branch at (828-682-3102) or e-mail (rbranch18@aol.com) by Thursday, June 2 to reserve your seat on the van. Please check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather. If the hike is rained out the group will try again on the following Saturday, June 11.
