Keep your summer full of fun by joining the NC High Peaks Trail Association for either of two hikes on the Appalachian Trail on Aug. 12.

The more challenging hike will travel 11.2 miles from Erwin, TN to Spivey Gap. This extremely strenuous hike is only for very fit, experienced hikers. It will include a 2,000-foot climb but will offer spectacular views into the Nolichucky River Gorge.

The more moderate hike will start at Spivey Gap and climb about 1,100 feet to High Rocks, where hikers will have lunch and also enjoy tremendous views. They will then return to Spivey Gap for an overall distance of 4 miles. Hikers on this trek can turn around at any point and return to Spivey Gap.

Hikers for both adventures should assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. Transportation will be provided in a Yancey County van for a $5 per person donation, reservations required by Thursday, Aug. 10. No pets are allowed on the vans so if you want to bring your leashed dog you must provide your own transportation. Contact the hike leader about where to meet.

Bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles and rain gear in case of bad weather.

To make your reservations, contact Hike Leader Dennis Smith at dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 284-4000 for the long hike or Hike Leader John Whitehouse at trails@nchighpeaks.org or 682-3217 for the shorter hike.

As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather.
