Spend Earth Day Volunteering at Mt. Mitchell State Park Apr 22

Celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 22nd high atop the tallest mountain in the Eastern U.S. by joining in a spring clean-up work day at Mount Mitchell State Park.

Any and all are invited to help remove trash and metal from an old dump site on Commissary Ridge near the junction of the park’s two most popular hiking trails, the Commissary Trail and the Mount Mitchell Trail.

Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves, sturdy footwear, snacks, water, lunch and layers of clothing because temperatures on Mt. Mitchell can often be surprisingly cold.

The day will start with everyone gathering at 10 a.m. at the Park Office, which is on the right just past the entrance gate. The work day should wrap up by 2 to 3 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by the NC High Peaks Trail Association, which is the official “Friends of Mount Mitchell State Park” organization.

For more information, contact Jake Blood at nchighpeaks@gmail.com, or 828-284-6878. While not required, it would be helpful for planning purposes to let him know you plan to attend.

The work will go on rain or shine, so bring raingear if the forecast looks threatening. In case of ice or snow, please check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for news of a cancellation.
