NC High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day Tuesday, September 3

We are planning to try to wrap up our work on the Black Mountain Crest Trail this Tuesday.  We will meet across from the Wellers' in the Cattail Creek Community. We will drive up to Twin Falls and hike up to Deep Gap.  If we have enough folks we will weed-eat and have a saw team take care of some trees near Winter Star and on the top part of the Colbert Ridge Trail.

High Peaks Tackles Big Butt Trail on Saturday, Sept. 7

With the Blue Ridge Parkway now open again, the High Peaks Trail Association will lead a strenuous hike Sept. 7 down the Big Butt Trail from Balsam Gap on the Parkway to Cane River Gap. This 5.6-mile trek descends about 1,500 feet, but also has a few significant climbs, including a long stairway up Little Butt. The climb is worth the effort, though, for the spectacular view of the Black Mountain chain from Little Butt.

High Peaks Trail Maintenance This Friday, August 23

The Black Mountain Crest Trail is in bad need of maintenance thanks to all the rain which has allowed the weeds to flourish.  There are also weeds and briars on the top section of the Woody Ridge Trail.  So Friday we plan to address these problems.  We will all go in using "Grace's Ladder" that connects the "High Grade" to the Crest Trail.  Dennis will ferry a weed-eater and a saw on his ATV up to the base of Grace's Ladder.  The rest of the crew will drive up Winter Star Road, past Five Maples and as far as the first or second creek crossing.  We will hike in and out from there.

Stroll at The Orchard- Sunday, August 25

Join the High Peaks Trail Association for a stroll at the historic Orchard at Altapass on Sunday Aug. 25. This moderate 2-mile hike will wind through the 100-year-old apple orchard, offering spectacular views from the crest of the Blue Ridge near Spruce Pine.

Historic Mitchell Toll Road- Rocky Knobs & Greybeard- Saturday, August 17

Tomorrow's hike is still on as planned. The weather forecast is calling for some rain but no thunder or lightning. Bring your rain gear, water, lunch and hiking poles if you have them. Should be a fun hike!

Big Butt Trail Hike- Sat, August 10 POSTPONED due to weather

We have postponed this hike due to high probablilty of thunderstorms/lightning.  It has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, September 7, at which time we are hopeful that the Blue Ridge Parkway will have reopened as far as Walker Knob so that we can do the hike as a one-way, more down than up hike from Walker Knob to Cane River Gap (197S). Watch for details in the next few weeks.
