Big Butt Trail Hike- Sat, August 10 POSTPONED due to weather

We have postponed this hike due to high probablilty of thunderstorms/lightning.  It has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, September 7, at which time we are hopeful that the Blue Ridge Parkway will have reopened as far as Walker Knob so that we can do the hike as a one-way, more down than up hike from Walker Knob to Cane River Gap (197S). Watch for details in the next few weeks.

Mt. Mitchell Stroll- Sunday, July 28

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a leisurely stroll in the cool air atop Mt. Mitchell on Sunday July 28.
This easy 1.5-mile jaunt will start at the parking area near the mountain’s summit. After a short climb up the observation tower, the group will follow a trail downhill to the Mt. Mitchell restaurant, where hikers have been known to indulge in a helping of their delicious pies or other desserts.

Blackstock Knob on MST- Saturday, July 20

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a hike across Blackstock Knob on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail on Saturday July 20th. This high-elevation hike offers spectacular views of the Asheville Watershed and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

NC High Peaks Board Meeting, Friday July 19

Rhododendron Gardens Stroll - Sunday, June 23

Join the N.C. High Peaks Trail Association for a leisurely stroll through the rhododendron garden at Roan Mountain this Sunday, June 23. Roan is famous for its dazzling display of colors, and the plants should be around their peak.

Isom Mine Hike- Saturday, June 15

The historic Isom Mine under Celo Knob will be the destination of a NC High Peaks Trail Association hike set for Saturday, June 15. This is a nine mile loop hike that starts and ends at the Weller Cabin on Cattail Creek Rd. near Pensacola. Hikers can expect a 2000 foot elevation gain over single track trail and old logging roads over the first three miles, spectacular views from the mica mine, followed by a gentle descent along an old railroad grade for the return trip.

High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day on Saturday June 8

Please join us on Saturday, June 8 for our monthly trail maintenance day.  This time we will be lopping and weed-eating the Upper River Loop Trail at Black Mountain Campground.  Early in April we cleared the trail of downed trees but our warm, wet spring means the weeds are growing fast!  Meet on the north side of the Burnsville town square at 8:30 AM or at Black Mountain Campground around 9 AM.  Contact John for more information at:

Roan Mountain Hike - Sat. June 1

North Carolina Hike Peaks Trail Association will celebrate National Trails Day, Saturday, June 1, with a five mile Roan Mountain hike. This is an out and back hike along Grassy Ridge from Carvers Gap. Featuring spectacular 360 degree views, the hike is up and down, but only has about 700 feet net elevation gain.

Sunday Stroll to Craggy Pinnacle- May 26

Craggy Pinnacle, with 360 degree views from atop its 5892 foot summit, will be the destination of the May 26 NC High Peaks Sunday Stroll. 
Participants should meet at 1:00 p.m. on the Burnsville Town Square for carpooling. Enjoy a drive on Forest Service roads and the Blue Ridge Parkway to and from Craggy Pinnacle. 
The stroll involves a 250 foot elevation gain and is a total of one mile in length. The group should return to the Town Square by 5 p.m. Bring good strolling shoes and plenty of water.
