Stroll Set Sunday, Feb 24 At New Rec Park

North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will conduct a Sunday stroll, Feb. 24, at the new Whitt Bottom Recreation Park. This is a dog and child friendly walk, about a mile long, with little or no elevation gain. Walkers can meet at the Town Square at 1 p.m. for car pooling, or at Whitt Bottom ( Cane River Rd. and 19W) at 1:20.

NC High Peaks Board Meeting, March 15

Colbert Ridge Hike- Sat, Feb 2

Join NC High Peaks Trail Association this Saturday for an arduous hike along the Colbert Ridge Trail. The hike traverses stately forests and steep terrain on the rocky Toe River side of the Black Mountains, affording spectacular views of the valley as well as Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, and Table Rock. Beginning at the Buncombe Horse Trail, hikers will ascend Middle Ridge past a little-known but spectacular waterfall, then cross over on a steep connecting trail to Colbert Ridge to complete a seven mile loop with rocky overlooks and a final descent past an old mica mine.

Sunday Stroll on New Trail at Mountain Heritage HS- January 27

On Sunday, January 27, hikers can meet at the Town Square at 1 p.m. or at the parking lot above the Mountain Heritage High School football field at 1:15 to stroll along the one mile trail. This is an easy, child, stroller and dog friendly hike with a gentle 200 foot elevation gain. Contact stroll leader Jake Blood at 284-6878 for more details. NC High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day, February 8 CANCELED

Friday we will return to Colbert Ridge Trail and work on the connector trail to Locust Creek Rd. and the falls.  Meet in Burnsville at 8:30 AM (north side of the town square), or at the Colbert Ridge trailhead around 9.  Bring loppers and hand saws, if you have them.  Please let me know if you can make it and where you will meet the crew.  Contact me at if you have any questions.

Crabtree Falls Hike- Sat Jan 5

Crabtree Falls will be the destination of the next hike led by the NC High Peaks Trail Association, set for Saturday, Jan. 5. Hikers should meet at the Town Square at 9:30 am or at Dennis and Nancy Smith’s house, 4 High View Trail at the T intersection with 7 Mile Ridge Rd. off Rte. 80, at 10 am. This is an easy, dog friendly hike, about one hour to the falls, 30 minutes there, and another hour back to the Smith house, where there will be food and fellowship.

NC High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day SATURDAY JAN 12

We will do our first trail work day of the year on the lower part of the Colbert Ridge Trail this Saturday, January 12.  Meeting times will be 8:30 AM on the North side of the Town Square (parking in front of the First Baptist Church) and 9 AM at the Colbert Ridge trailhead.  Please let me know if you can make it (  We worked the upper part of this trail last summer but I don't think anyone has surveyed the lower part since then.

HP Trail Maintenance on Friday, Dec. 14

Please join us as we finish the year working on trails in our area.  We plan to work Bald Knob Ridge Trail which runs from the Parkway to Forest Service Road 472 from Black Mountain Campground.  This is 2.8 miles long and has trees down, at least on the upper part.  If time allows we may also tackle the Lower Loop Trail at the campground.  Meet in Burnsville at the Town Square at 8:30 AM on Friday or around 9 AM at the parking area opposite Black Mountain Campground.  We will proceed to the lower trail head and leave a vehicle there then everyone will start at the Parkway trailhead.

Historical Stroll around Burnsville- Sat, Dec 22

Join NC High Peaks Saturday December 22 for a stroll of Historic Burnsville and then get special deals for last minute Christmas shopping from businesses on Main Street. 
Meet at 1 p.m. in the Burnsville Municipal Parking Lot in front of the Yancey County Board of Elections (next to Hammond's Antiques) to learn about Burnsville and Yancey County History as the group strolls the storied streets of Burnsville.
