Stroll to Green Knob Fire Tower- Sunday October 28

Hikers will have a rare opportunity to explore the historic Green Knob Fire Tower just off the Blue Ridge Parkway when the NC High Peaks Trail Association holds their monthly stroll this Sunday, Oct. 28. This is a dog and kid friendly event.
Hikers may meet at the Burnsville Town Square for carpooling at 1 p.m. or at the Green Knob overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 2 p.m. More information may be obtained by going to or by calling Jake Blood at 828-284-6878.

Trail Maintenance on Friday October 26

We will be doing trail maintenance on the Green Knob Lookout Tower Trail on Friday, October 26 in preparation for our stroll to the tower on Sunday, October 28.  Meet on the North side of the Town Square at 8:30 AM or at the Green Knob lower trailhead (across from the Black Mountain Campground) around 9 AM.  You can use the "signup form" option to let me know you'll be participating.  If you have any questions contact me at  Hope to see you!

Please join us for our next Board Meeting on Thursday at 3:30 PM (change of date and time from our normal meeting time) in the Mountain Heritage Center across from the Parkway Playhouse.

NC High Peaks Trail Association ANNUAL Meeting

Our Second Annual Meeting of the ncHPta membership will be Saturday, October 20 at 3 PM in the Community Room on the second floor of the NEW Yancey County Library (321 School Circle, across from the Parkway Playhouse) in Burnsville, NC.
Join us as we elect three members of the Board for NC High Peaks Trail Association as well as to hear updates on our on-going activities and to set priorities for the upcoming year. 

Mile High Crest Trail Destination For Oct. 6 Outing

The Black Mountain Crest Trail with some of the best views in the East will be the location of the Saturday, Oct. 6 outing of the North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association. Hikers will start at Mt. Mitchell and follow the trail four miles to Deep Gap, at which point they will drop down the old Carolina Spruce Company railroad grade into the Cattail Creek Community where they will find food and fellowship at the John and Sandy Whitehouse Cabin on Winter Star Road.

Sunday Stroll on Loop Trail at The Orchard- Sept 30

The Orchard at Altapass will be the site of NC High Peaks Trail Association’s next Sunday stroll, Sept. 30, with a two mile meander through the apple orchards, ending with an opportunity to purchase ice cream, apple cider and snacks and listen to music and dance.
This is a child and dog friendly outing, but pets need to be on leashes. Clean-up bags will be provided.

High Peaks Trail Maintenance Day on Friday September 21

This Friday, September 21, we plan to continue working our section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.  

Mountain Heritage High School Nature Trail Workday Saturday (Sept 15)

Come join NC High Peaks for a TrailWorkday at Mountain Heritage High School this Saturday (Sep15) from 9am to noon.  Meet at the Orr Building justdown from the Football Parking lot and greenhouses. Breakfast will be provided by Toe River Valley Watch!! Dress is sturdy pants, close-toed shoes and bringgloves.  We will be laying down weed-barrier fabric andmulch on Phase One of the MHHS Nature Trail. Lost Cove Hike- Sunday, September 16

NC High Peaks and Carolina Mountain Club are staging a joint hike into Lost Cove on Sunday, Sept. 16. This is an eight mile round trip hike with a 1500 foot descent over a long series of switchbacks into the famous  pre-Civil War settlement that once thrived in isolation in the Nolichucky Gorge along the remote northern boundary of Yancey County.
