Two Hikes March 17...One Very Strenuous, One Less Strenuous!!

ncHighPeaks offers two hikes March 17 (Saturday), one very strenuous and a second less strenuous!! The longer, strenuous 12-mile hike will feature a loop along the Black Mountain Crest Trail from Deep Gap to Celo Knob, while the shorter, less strenuous 8-mile hike will follow an old railroad-grade below the Black Mountain Crest Trail. All hikers will meet at the Burnsville Town Square at 7:30 a.m., or at the Cattail Creek Community parking lot on Cattail Creek Road at 8am. We'll carpool up to "5 Maples", then all hike up several switchbacks to the "level" railroad-grade.

Sunday Stroll to Roaring Fork Falls Feb 26

Join the NC HighPeaks for a leisurely Sunday Stroll to Roaring Fork Falls this Sunday (Feb 26).  The 1.5-mile hike is fairly level with less than 100-feet of elevation gain and a high pay-off view of the falls.  We will meet at 1 p.m. on the Burnsville Town Square to car pool or you can meet us at the Busick US Forest Service Work Center at 1:30 p.m.  Visit our website at or contact hike leader Cynthia Blood at 678-0755 for more information.  See you on the Trails!

Crest Trail from Deep Gap to Celo- Sat., Feb. 11

Hike is still on!
A modified version of today's hike is a go, with meeting times the same. When you get to the Community Hall parking lot, cross the road to the Weller's cabin and come in for a brief orientation. We'll hike directly from the Weller's cabin up a new route to the Mica Mine, 6.5 miles round trip. If the weather gets to windy, we'll turn around of course.
After the hike there will be hamburgers and libations at the Wellers!

New Details for Crabtree Falls Hike- Sat, Jan 14

After conducting trail maintenance on the Celo Community to Crabtree Falls trail last week, the North Carolina High Peaks Association has decided to reclassify their hike planned for this Saturday, Jan. 14, from “stroll” to “moderately difficult.” The loop trail picked out is 6.5 miles, with a steep ascent up an old wagon road and a possibly icy descent to the falls. Along the way there are some panoramic views of the Blacks, from Mt. Mitchell to Celo.
