High Peaks Stroll near Mt. Mitchell Sunday, Sept. 29

Take a stroll back in time Sunday, Sept. 29 when the High Peaks Trail Association leads an afternoon walk to the site of Camp Alice, an historic logging camp high on the slopes of Mt. Mitchell.
This gentle walk of about 2.5 miles will begin at Stepps Gap near the headquarters of  Mt. Mitchell State Park. Hikers will follow the path of an old railroad line out to Camp Alice, where loggers toiled in the early 1900s and were replaced a few years later by tourists visiting the newly-created state park.
Hikers will gather on the Burnsville Town Square at 1 p.m. Transportation in a Yancey County van will be provided for a fee of $5 per person. No pets are allowed in the vans. Hikers who chose to drive to the trailhead should gather at Stepps Gap at 2 p.m.
After the hike the group will visit the Mt. Mitchell restaurant for an afternoon snack before returning to the Burnsville Town Square around 4 p.m.
