High Peaks Leads Hike From Mt. Mitchell Sat, May 17

The High Peaks Trail Association will lead a hike from the summit of Mt. Mitchell to the Black Mountain Campground on Saturday, May 17. This strenuous 5.5-mile hike will be tough on the knees: hikers will descend about 3,600 feet from the East’s highest peak to the South Toe River Valley.
Hikers can assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. for carpooling, or they can meet at the kiosk near the entrance to Black Mountain Campground at 9 a.m. A Yancey County van will shuttle the group from the campground entrance to the top of Mt. Mitchell at a cost of $5 per person.
Bring snacks, plenty of water and lunch for the hike. Leashed dogs are welcome but not allowed in the county vans, so if you want to bring your pet please plan to carpool. This means you will need a ride from the campground back to the summit after completing the hike.
Please check the club’s website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather. To reserve a seat on the van contact hike leader Mike Williams at 675-9384 or mikew3000@gmail.com.
