Hike the AT with High Peaks on Saturday May 13!

Celebrate Spring by joining the NC High Peaks Trail Association with a hike on the Appalachian Trail on Sat., May 13.  This is the hike originally planned for May 6 but postponed due to weather.  Note, only the one-way hike will take place.  We will not do the moderate hike.

This challenging hike will start at Hughes Gap and proceed over a series of peaks before descending to Iron Mountain Gap. The overall distance is 10.8 miles and the hike is rated as very strenuous, mainly because of the length and an ascent of 900 feet.

Hikers should assemble in  Burnsville in the Rose's parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Transportation will be provided in a Yancey County van for a suggested donation of $5, reservations required by Thursday, May 11. No pets are allowed on the vans, so you must provide your own transportation if you plan to bring your leashed dog along.

Bring sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and rain gear, hiking poles (recommended), lunch and plenty of water.

To reserve your spot on the  hike, contact Hike Leader Robert Branch at rbranch54@yahoo.com or 828. 682.3102. You must reserve your spot by May 11 although last minute hikers will be welcome on the van if there is room..

As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-second changes due to weather.
