High Peaks Explores Lost Cove Oct. 7

The N.C. High Peaks Trail Association will lead hikers into the historic abandoned community of Lost Cove on Saturday, Oct.7. Settled during or shortly after the Civil War, Lost Cove is nestled above the Nolichucky River, and can only be reached on foot.

This strenuous hike of about 7.5 miles round-trip will descend about 1,200 feet in elevation to visit the Lost Cove ruins, buildings and other historic artifacts, followed by a 1,200-foot climb back to our starting point.

This hike is a serious challenge and should only be attempted by seasoned hikers in good condition. Contact the hike leader in advance unless you are completely confident of your ability.

Bring a lunch, plenty of water and leashed dogs if you choose. Hikers will meet on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m.  Van transportation will be provided for a donation of $5 per person, but dogs are not allowed on the vans, so you must provide your own transportation if you bring one.

Contact hike leader Jake Blood at 828.284.6878 or nchighpeaks@gmail.com to reserve a spot on the van or if you have any questions.  Reservations are required by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5.
