High Peaks Leads Scenic Hikes Near Parkway Sept. 1

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association as the group leads two hikes on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail Saturday, Sept. 1. Both hikes will offer tremendous views of the surrounding mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The less-strenuous hike will start at the Walker Knob Overlook and proceed 3.9 miles to the Graybeard Overlook with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. The strenuous hike will cover the same ground but then proceed on to the Craggy Visitor Center, a total distance of 6.5 miles, also with a 700-foot elevation gain.

Hikers should gather on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m. Transportation to and from the trail will be provided in Yancey Transportation vans for a donation of $5 per person, reservations required by the evening of Thursday, Aug. 30. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike but not on the vans, so if you want to bring your dog you must provide your own transportation and can meet the group at Walker Knob Overlook on the Parkway at 9:30 a.m.

Bring hiking poles, rain gear, water, snacks and lunch. First-time hikers are asked to contact the hike leader in advance, especially if you have physical limitations. To make van reservations or for any questions, contact Hike Leader John Whitehouse at 682-3217 or trails@nchighpeaks.org.

As always, please check the club’s Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
