High Peaks Visits Historic Cemeteries at Lake James March 21

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and recommendations from CDC we are postponing this hike most likely until late fall.  Sorry but High Peaks believes this is in everyones best interest.  Watch our Facebook page and website for self-guided hiking suggestions for individuals who want to get outdoors!

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, March 21 for a pleasant hike at Lake James near Marion.  The hike will feature visits to three historic cemeteries in the park.

The approximately 4-mile hike is rated as easy to moderate as it will mostly follow graded trails that offers beautiful lake views. Some off-trail hiking will be necessary to see one of the graveyards.

Hikers should assemble in the Rose’s Shopping Center parking lot overlooking Highway 19E at 9:30 a.m. Transportation will be provided in a Yancey van for a donation of $5 per person, reservations required. Dogs are not allowed on the vans so if you want to bring your leashed pet you must provide your own transportation. The ride to Lake James from Burnsville will take about an hour each way.  We will start at the Holly Discovery trailhead.

Bring lunch, snacks, water, warm clothes and rain gear if the forecast is threatening. Please contact Hike Leader Kevin Cox at rodney.cox@ncparks.gov (preferred) or 828-604-5282 by Thursday evening, March 19 to make your van reservation.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
