Join High Peaks for Aug. 13 Hike at Mt. Mitchell

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association at cooler, high elevations on Friday, Aug. 13 when the group leads a strenuous hike along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and then climbs to the Mt. Mitchell summit.

The five-mile hike will ascend about 1,200 feet and has some rugged sections, so only experienced hikers should participate.

Meet at the Mt. Mitchell summit parking lot at 9 a.m. The group will carpool back down to the starting point where the Mountains-to-Sea Trail crosses NC 128, then hike out an old railroad grade for a few miles before steeply climbing to the Mt. Mitchell summit.

Bring water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles if you use them and rain gear if you think you might need it. Leashed dogs are allowed, but you should be prepared to clean up after your pet if necessary.

The hike will be limited to 12 participants. To reserve your slot or for more information, contact Hike Leader Dennis Smith at dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 828-284-4000.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
