High Peaks Leads Strenuous Hike over Blackstock Knob Oct. 8

High Peaks will take advantage of early fall color at high elevations with a challenging hike on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail over Blackstock Knob on Friday, Oct. 8.

The outing is rated as strenuous and should not be attempted by inexperienced hikers. The trek will cover about 6 miles, including a steep climb up a rocky face with an overall elevation gain of about 1,200 feet. The reward will be fantastic views from several spots along the trail.

Bring lunch and snacks, plenty of water, warm clothes and hiking poles if you use them. Leashed dogs will be allowed on the hike.

Hikers should gather at the Ridge Junction Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 9 a.m. The overlook is near Mile Marker 355 and the turn to Mt. Mitchell State Park. The group will car shuttle from there.

The hike is limited to 12, so contact Hike Leader Dennis Smith at dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 828-284-4000 to reserve your slot or for more information.

As always, please check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather.
