High Peaks Leads Big Butt Hike Nov. 12

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a strenuous hike up the Big Butt Trail on Friday, Nov. 12 on an outing that should offer tremendous views of the Black Mountain range.

The roughly 6-mile hike will include a challenging ascent of nearly 1,500 feet from Cane River Gap up and over Big and Little Butts, ending on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Walker Knob Overlook.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Rose’s Shopping Center parking lot overlooking the traffic light on Highway 19. The group will be shuttled to Cane River Gap on a Yancey Transportation van for a donation of $10 per rider. Reservations for the vans are required, as are masks while riding in the vans. The vans will pick up the group at the end of the hike and shuttle them back to the Town Square.

Bring lunch, snacks, water, warm clothes and rain gear if needed, along with hiking poles if you use them. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike, but not on the vans, so if you plan to bring your pet you will need to arrange your own transportation.

The group will be limited to a dozen. To reserve your spot and your seat on a van, contact Hike Leader Dennis Smith at dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 828-284-4000.

As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather.
