High Peaks Leads Challenging Hike from Mt. Mitchell Summit Dec. 3

Body:

Fit hikers looking for a challenge are invited to join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Friday, Dec. 3 for a 6-mile jaunt down the Mt. Mitchell Trail from the summit to the Black Mountain Campground.

The outing will be open only to experienced hikers in top condition, as the trail is in rough shape with bad footing and a descent of nearly 4,000 feet that can be punishing on the knees.

Meet at the parking area across from the campground entrance at 8:30 a.m. to form car shuttles for the ride to Mt. Mitchell State Park. Bring hiking poles if you use them, warm clothes, rain gear if the forecast is threatening, lunch, snacks and plenty of water.  Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike but check with the Hike Leader ahead of time to make sure the car shuttle will work for you.

The estimated hiking time is about 4 hours. The group will be limited to a dozen and hikers need to be able to keep up with the group.

Contact Hike Leader Dennis Smith at dennissmith4141@gmail.com or 828-284-4000 to reserve a spot and to discuss your experience and fitness levels.

Please check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
