Lost Cove Hike Set for May 6

The N.C. High Peaks Trail Association will lead hikers into the historic abandoned community of Lost Cove on Friday, May 6. Settled during or shortly after the Civil War, Lost Cove is nestled above the Nolichucky River, and can only be reached on foot.

This very strenuous hike of about 7.5 miles will descend about 1,200 feet in elevation to visit the Lost Cove ruins, buildings and cemetery, followed by a 1,200-foot climb back to our starting point.  Only experienced hikers in good condition should attempt this hike. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Meet in the parking lot of the Rose’s Shopping Center in Burnsville at 8:30 a.m. in the corner overlooking the traffic light on Highway 19E. The group will use Yancey Transportation vans for a donation of $5 per person. Masks are required when riding on the van. Due to limited parking all hikers will ride on the van so be sure to reserve your seat! No dogs are allowed on the vans. As usual be sure to check the club’s website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes. The hike will be limited to 12 hikers. Contact hike leader Jake Blood at 828-284-6878 or nchighpeaks@gmail.com to reserve a spot on the van or if you have any questions. Reservations are required by 5 pm Wednesday May 4.
