Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a fun hike on the Appalachian Trail on Saturday, May 18. This out-and-back adventure will start at Sam’s Gap and climb to Street Gap, for a total distance of about 5 miles. The hike has several steep climbs and an overall elevation gain of 500 feet, so it is rated as moderately difficult.
Hikers should assemble at the Rose’s Shopping Center parking lot at 8:30 a.m., on the corner overlooking US 19-E. The group will take a Yancey Transportation van for the 30-minute ride to Sam’s Gap, with a $5 donation requested from each passenger. Dogs are welcome to hike with the group, but are not allowed on the van, so pet owners must arrange their own transportation.
Bring lunch, snacks, plenty of water, hiking poles if you use them and clothing appropriate for the forecast.
Contact Hike Leader Jimmie Bowen at jbowen6116@gmail.com or 252-450-5224 to reserve your seat on the van, or for more informations.
As always, check the High Peaks website, www.nchighpeaks.org, or Facebook page for last-minute changes due to weather.
