Exceptionally fit and very experienced hikers are invited to join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Friday, July 5 for a very challenging hike on the Black Mountain Crest Trail. The 11-mile jaunt will offer spectacular views from Yancey’s signature mountain chain.
Meet at the Bolen’s Creek paid-parking area at 8:00 a.m. and bring $5 for your parking spot - please carpool if you can because there is a limited number of spaces. We’ll then take a Yancey Transportation van to the Mount Mitchell summit, so you’ll need another $5 per person for that ride.
The hike down to Bolen’s is a tough one, including rough footing, several sets of fixed ropes on sheer rock faces, a few steep climbs and very long, steep descents. The hike should take 7 to 9 hours. We can’t stress enough that you must know your fitness level and stamina before attempting this outing.
Bring lunch, snacks, lots and lots of water, hiking poles if you use them and clothing fit for the weather forecast. Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike but are not permitted on the county vans, so if you want to bring your canine friend you must arrange your own transportation.
For directions and more information, contact Hike Leader Jimmie Bowen at Jimmie@nchighpeaks.orgor 252-450-5224. Please let him know if you plan to join the group.
