Two Hikes March 17...One Very Strenuous, One Less Strenuous!!

ncHighPeaks offers two hikes March 17 (Saturday), one very strenuous and a second less strenuous!! The longer, strenuous 12-mile hike will feature a loop along the Black Mountain Crest Trail from Deep Gap to Celo Knob, while the shorter, less strenuous 8-mile hike will follow an old railroad-grade below the Black Mountain Crest Trail. All hikers will meet at the Burnsville Town Square at 7:30 a.m., or at the Cattail Creek Community parking lot on Cattail Creek Road at 8am. We'll carpool up to "5 Maples", then all hike up several switchbacks to the "level" railroad-grade. Here we'll break into two groups, one for the longer hike and the other for the shorter hike. The more longer hike will follow the railroad-grade south to Deep Gap, then follow the Crest Trail up to Winter Star, across Long Ridge to Celo Knob, then drop down "Gracie's ladder" back to the railroad-grade, continue down past Isom mine and back to the "5 Maples," covering about 12 miles with a 2,000 feet elevation gain AND descent. The shorter hike will follow the railroad-grade to the north, passing under each of the peaks but not climbing up to the crest trail, also visit the Isom Mine and continue back to the beginning at "5 Maples." This shorter hike will cover about 8 miles with an elevation gain of about 1,400 feet. Dennis Smith is the hike leader for the 12 mile hike, while Jake Blood will lead the shorter version.
