The First Day Hike at Mt. Mitchell State Park has been cancelled due to hazardous road conditions on the Parkway and in the park.  However we WILL have a First Day Hike, see below.

Start the New Year off right by joining the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Monday, January 1, New Year’s Day, for one of two hikes at the Black Mountain Campground.  If you plan to join us on the New Year’s Day please review the Liability Waiver below. You will be required to sign that you have read and understood it.

One hike will be a moderate, 2.5-mile jaunt on the Lower River Loop, while a separate, more ambitious hike will traverse 3.7 miles on the Upper River Loop.  Both hikes will visit Setrock Creek Falls, located a short distance away in the campground.

Hikers should assemble at the parking lot across from the entrance to the Black Mountain Campground at 10 a.m. Bring lunch, water, snacks, hiking poles if you use them, foul weather gear if needed and plenty of layers of warm clothes.

Leashed (and well mannered) dogs are allowed on the hikes, but bring your poop bags! Both hikes will last an estimated 2 to 3 hours.

If you have any questions contact Hike Leader John Whitehouse at trails@nchighpeaks.org (preferred) or at 828-682-3217.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
