Stroll the Old Mt. Mitchell Trail

Body:

Sunday Stroll Set for July 29 North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association will hold its monthly “Sunday Stroll” on July 29th at Mt. Mitchell. This is a family friendly, relaxed hike following the Old Mt. Mitchell Trail from the summit to the restaurant. The group will visit an education center along the way, enjoy a panoramic view from the observation platform, and hike through one of the most unique ecosystems in the eastern United States. The trail is about one mile long with a descent of 450 feet.

Hikers may meet at the Burnsville Town Square at 1 p.m. for carpooling and public transportation or at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Mitchell parking lot near the summit. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Remember that temperatures can be 10 to 15 degrees lower on the mountain with higher winds, so have an extra wrap and/or windbreaker.

More information may be had by calling hike leader Dennis Smith at 675-9459 or 284-4000 or by going to www.nchighpeaks.org. The group may also be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ncHighPeaks. Watch for the NC High Peaks booth at the August Burnsville Crafts Fair.
