Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a fun hike along the Laurel River Trail near Marshall on Sat., Feb. 8.

This 7.2-mile jaunt is relatively flat, but offers some nice views of river rapids, rock features and even the ruins of the old town of Runion. It’s an out-and-back hike along the Laurel River to its junction with the French Broad, and should take about 3 hours.

Meet in Burnsville at the Roses Shopping Center Parking lot on the corner overlooking US 19E at 9 a.m. and we’ll carpool - a drive of about an hour - to the trailhead. Or you may choose to meet the group at 10 a.m. at the Laurel River parking area, which is a large gravel pull-out about 100 yards south of the intersection of Hwy 25N/70W and Hwy 208.

Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, hiking poles if you use them and sturdy hiking boots. The trail is a bit rocky and rough in places, especially after the damage left by Hurricane Helene. Please check the forecast and wear enough layers to stay warm.

Leashed dogs are allowed on the hike, but please be prepared to clean up anything your pooch leaves on the trail.

Please contact hike leader Jimmie Bowen at jimmie@nchighpeaks.org or text 252-450-5224to let him know if you plan to join the group, or if you have any questions.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
