Join High Peaks for an easy-to-moderate hike near the Black Mountain Campground on Friday, May 29. We’ll do an out-and-back on the Lower River Loop, which overlooks the South Toe River.
Meet at the parking lot across from the campground at 9 a.m. We can no longer do a loop because of flooding damage from Helene, but we’ll hike 4 to 5 miles without much elevation change, taking in the Devil’s Den Nature Trail on the return trip to the campground.
Bring water, snacks, sturdy shoes and hiking poles if you use them. Leashed dogs are welcome but come prepared to clean up after your pet.
Be aware that the heavily-damaged campground is under construction, so we’ll need to take care as we cross through it to start the hike.
As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to the weather.
