Exceptionally-fit and very experienced hikers are invited to join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, July 25 for a very challenging hike on the Black Mountain Crest Trail. The 11.2 mile jaunt will offer spectacular views from Yancey County's signature mountain chain.
Meet at the Bolen’s Creek paid-parking area at 7:30 a.m. and bring $5 or use Venmo to pay for your parking spot - please carpool if you can because there is a limited number of spaces. We’ll then take a Yancey Transportation van for the two-hour ride to the Mount Mitchell summit, so you’ll need another $10 per person for that ride. Space on the van is also limited to 12 people so sign up early.
The hike down to Bolen’s is a tough one, including rough footing, several sets of fixed ropes on sheer rock faces, a few steep climbs and very long, steep descents. The hike should take 8 to 10 hours. We can’t stress enough that you must know your fitness level and stamina before attempting this outing.
Bring lunch, snacks, lots and lots of water, hiking poles if you use them and clothing fit for the weather forecast. Dogs are NOT allowed on this hike because they are not permitted on the county vans. Also the challenging terrain and extended time on the trail is likely too much for the dogs and their owners.
For sign-up, directions, questions and more information, contact Hike Leader Jimmie Bowen at Jimmie@nchighpeaks.org or 252-450-5224. Again this hike will be limited to 12 hikers due to limited space on the van.
