In conjunction with the Forest Service and The Blue Ridge Parkway Rangers' Office,  NC High Peaks will be hosting an "Open House" at The Green Knob Fire Tower, Mile Marker 350.4 on Friday, July 15th, from @1:00-4:00PM, weather permitting.  The Fire Tower was constructed in 1931 and was in operation until the late 70's.

The Fire Tower was open to visitors until very recently when vandals did such significant damage to the 'cab' that authorities were forced to make the decision to keep the trap door up into the cab locked at all times.  So we are always excited when we can provide access to the tower for visitors every so often.

After the 15th, there are several more Open Houses planned, tentatively on July 21st and 29th.  Check back here for more info.

FYI

The hike to the base of the tower is a 1/2 mile, rather steep with switchbacks, and the wooden steps up to the cab of the tower are VERY steep as well.  If heights are not your friend, this climb is not for you.
